Japanese designer label, Thibaut, debuted its Spring/Summer 2018 collection at Amazon Fashion Week in Tokyo recently, and one model was seen wearing a nude bodysuit, New Balance trainers, and these, um, ‘thong jeans’...
What is going on?
To understand how ridiculous they are, I think you really just have to see them for yourself. They’re basically jeans with nothing left of them, apart from the seams. They have pretty much no back at all apart from a thin strip of denim, they look like some kind of safety hazard, and no one in their right mind would EVER wear them.
Topshop’s weird ‘window’ jeans look pretty tame now in comparison, don’t they?
They look highly impractical, and the comments from elderly relatives just don’t bear thinking about. A Harpers Bazaar writer commented, 'Yes, thong jeans now exist and if you'll excuse me, I'm off to start my official Make Jeans Whole Again campaign'.
The thong jean – ‘jong’? - is not available to buy just yet, but may be coming to stores next year. We can’t see them flying off the shelves if we're honest with you.
I look for comfort and, you know, some level of warmth from my jeans. The flimsy cage left from this uber distressed denim is the least practical thing I have ever laid eyes on.

Thibaut’s jean creation has certainly raised a few raised eyebrows, but Tophsop have also come out with some unconventional styles in the past, like the totally clear jeans which were just totally bizarre, and the window jeans.
After the clear jeans came out, Topshop's head of design Mo Riach told Elle, 'We want to disrupt. We want to do something that will get people talking,'. Riach added, 'It's a positive thing. Debate and discussion is a positive thing, and we have our customers coming to our site as a result of that.'
It’s like the fashion version of click bait, and we are so not here for it.
