The Prom has all the makings of a great pick-me-up movie, the kind you should watch when things in the real world feel like they’re falling apart a little bit (i.e. the whole of 2020). It’s a musical, directed by Glee’s Ryan Murphy, starring a sequin-wearing Meryl Streep and featuring, at its heart, a high school student who wants to take her girlfriend to the biggest night of any high-schooler’s life: the prom.

Cue big blowsy show numbers, with Broadway legends Nicole Kidman (looking much more razz-ma-tazz and less worried than her character in The Undoing), James Cordon and Andrew Rannells joining the marvellous Meryl, together raising ‘holy hell’ after the high school announces that the prom will be unceremoniously cancelled. The trailer alone will make you long for the days of bodycon, tit tape and Spanx. For now, these outfits that say one thing and one thing only to us: joy.
