Tavi Gevinson On Being In The Pirelli Calendar And Heading To Broadway

This year the Pirelli Calendar has got a feminist makeover, moving away from its pin up past. This new and improved Cal features portraits, shot by Annie Leibovitz, of 13 inspiring woman from Patti Smith to Yoko Ono.

One of these accomplished women is blogger and founder of Rookie, Tavi Gevinson. At the launch of the Pirelli Calendar in London we asked Tavi who she finds inspiring. She said: "I'm so excited to go through our submissions and find illustrators. Not to be too hyperbolic but there's something so pure about when you're young and making art for yourself and having the confidence to send it in and share it with the world is so hard to build. I want women to feel more comfortable with themselves, because you're not taught to put yourselves out there in the same way. So I get very inspired by going through those every day and exchanges with artists and writers finding their point of you."

Tavi has always used fashion as a tool of empowerment: "You can use your personal style to excercise your autonomy which it has been for me." She added: "Personal style is what you make of it so for me it was a way of expressing myself. Side effects were that I got amazing experiences and got to meet inspiring people who became friends and mentors and extract whatever I could that would help me develop as a person.'

Tavi, 19, is now turning to acting and when we asked her what she sees as her dream role she said: "I am about to play Mary Warren in the Crucible on Broadway, I don't need anything after that that's amazing, I'm so excited." For now she is more interested in theatre than cinema - "you get to really get into it if you're doing it every night for six months and discover new things."

Tavi explained that although she is heading into her twenties and has now moved to New York, she is still going through the same things as her Rookie readers. "It's kind of same shit, different day. I don't think being young in New York is so different from being in high school in the US. Change is constant, it's not only something that happens in teenagers so I feel like that's why a lot of adults do relate to Rookie."
