The Subtle Anti-Trump Message At Moschino’s AW18 Show

Jeremy Scott wowed Milan Fashion Week with Moschino’s AW18 show, which parlayed Jackie Kennedy references and anti-Trump sentiments into one chic ‘60s infused collection.

‘I was thinking about immigration and illegal immigrants, or illegal “aliens” when I was designing the collection,’ the designer told DazedDigtal of his inspiration. ‘I wanted to play with the idea of what an alien actually looks like.’ As President Trump’s continued fixation on America’s (legal and illegal) immigrants as a political baton rolls on, Scott said referring to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals): ‘People in my country – some who have lived there since they were children, who have children of their own and are giving back to their communities, are getting evicted from the USA amidst fake news and hysteria. So I thought okay, I’m going to play a little on what an “alien” supposedly looks like.’

This sentiment was played out in Scott’s own-line label’s NYFW showearlier this month. There he took inspiration from cult film The Fifth Element, dressing his models in choppy wigs and sci-fi suits.

While some of the models were painted Simpsons yellow, Avatar blue and Monsters, Inc. green the clothes at Moschino’s MFW show weren’t actually out of this world. In fact, they played second fiddle to the concept. Co-ordinated skirt suits, pillbox hats, shift dresses and glitzy evening wear trundled down the catwalk on models (like Kaia Gerber and Bella and Gigi Hadid) with stiff bouffants.

Playing on the Sixties theme, Scott broke the show into two parts. The first half was full Jackie O with catchy-match tailoring and Roy Lichtenstein esque patterns. While, the latter was glittering and sexy, like Jacqueline Kennedy’s supposed rival, Marilyn Monroe .Under our breath, we’re wondering whether this is the ultimate Marilyn and Jackie O Face-off.

Politics doesn’t necessarily come easily to a label that’s always had its tongue placed firmly in its cheek, but this time it did.
