Another day, another dollar, another denim hero. Right now, it’s your mum. Or ‘mom’ if we’re being true to the American routes of this style. The premise being, that only someone as ‘non’ trend-led as your mum would wear trousers that go up her crotch, and which are tapered but not skinny. The irony, of course, being that mom jeans are super on-trend.
Nonetheless, they’re not the *easiest *jean to wear. Not only can they be deeply unflattering when worn with the wrong thing, but you also do not want to get these two tight. So, in an attempt to be helpful, here are five things to wear them with.
A sik shirt
A vintage-infused classic is always model Camille Rowe’s look. Think, white silk shirt – unbuttoned low – with washed-out mom jeans. Camille’s are Levi’s; the perfect pair can be hard to find, but worth the search. Start with Urban Outfitters.
A crop top
Nothing cuter/easier than a grungy, stripy crop top worn with an oversized plaid shirt. Add some Chucks and run around town.
A camisole
Try a tiny little camisole with a ruffled hem, cut just under your boobs – so you can see a sliver of abs above your super-high mom jean waistband. Channel stylist Whitney Cox and get some SoCal vibes into your bones.
A pair of brogues
Model Grace Small loves to wear her mom jeans with lace-up DMs and as photographer Berta Bernad shows, brogues can add a modern note to some classic vintage jeans.
A Barbie bag
Not an actual bag made of Barbies, but a super-kitsch, ultra-cute pink handbag. Model Caroline Brasch-Nielsen keeps things ‘model off duty’ with boyfriend jeans, a loose white tee and a black belt – but then adds a fun and unexpected note with her bubblegum pink houndstooth handbag.
