Dear Debrief,
Are there any particular items I should be looking to snap up in the sales - what’s going to last from Winter through Spring?
Hannah
Dear Hannah,
I applaud you for thinking ahead and making the most of the sales! It’s so easy to get swept up in the mania and invest in a tokenistic piece because it’s there and it’s cheaper, not because it will be useful in the coming months.
While it may not feel like it right now, spring (in fashion terms) begins in a matter of weeks. From the start of January, new season wears will be arriving on shop floors and with them the lure of the new. Though it might seem like a new agenda has been set, it’s in fact not so very different from pieces we’ve seen hanging in shop windows for months now. For instance, trench coats and dark, selvedge denim are being touted alongside bumbags and pencil skirts as an injection of ‘newness’, but I know for a fact you can buy these items right now.
What should you be looking for? After a year of bottomless millennial pink the tide has finally turned on this colour and a new pastel tone is taking up the gauntlet. The sweetness of parma-violet left a sugary trail across Victoria Beckham, J.W. Anderson and Erdem’s catwalks. We’re calling it the shade of the season. Though we tried to deny it, the belt bag has found its way into favour once again. The humble fanny pack unified the runways of Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, Fenty Puma by Rihanna, Givenchy and Balenciaga. Similarly, geometric necklines were a catwalk surprise for this season with square collars dressing up gowns, going out-out tops and slip dresses at Christian Dior and Rodarte.

Though we only just got our heads around how to wear the heck out of sheer tulle à la Molly Goddard, the fashion world has moved on to a new, wackier school of transparency. Following Raf Simon’s experimentations at Calvin Klein the style world would like us to all wear transparent plastic be it in the form of a skirt, shirt or over-layer. While you’re spying these trends keep an eye out for plaid, in the vein of Burberry, pencil skirts, like that at Prada and Gucci.
