We were a bit unsure we’d got the right venue when we rocked up to Sophia Webster’s AW15 presentation today, all dark tunnels and cobwebs in a deserted house off Piccadilly – but it was a pretty cool choice for a collection called ‘Freak Like Me’.
Inside, unnaturally bendy girls dressed in chequerboard body suits contorted and swayed, showing off Sophia’s new shoes with a bit of a creepy clown vibe.
The collection had the usual neon and monochrome jazzy razzmatazz thing going on, but with a few new extras, like pompom shoe slips for the front of your stilettos, plenty of knee-high boots, and a whole load more mouthiness – more than ever the shoes were branded with sassy slogans.
‘I like to design with a bit of sass,’ Sophia told us. ‘A lot of the slogans come from song lyrics I like.’
One pair that caught our eye was the ‘boss lady’ pointy courts.
‘Haha, that’s because people in my office call me the boss lady!’ said Sophia. ‘I really like to empower women with my shoes. There’s nothing else like shoes to make you feel better, stand better, make you slimmer and make your bum look better!’ Amen to that.
