Can A Size 4, 8 And 18 All Get Away With The Sheer Trend?

Glossy fashion magazines would like us to think that the world is populated by Amazonian beauties with minuscular waists and size zero hips. Sorry, but that’s not the case. This planet is full of women of all different shapes and sizes. So, when we see trends taken from the catwalk to editorials and it’s only shown on the slimmest and tallest of women it gives a distorted view of the clothes. Here to burst that bubble one pin prick at a time we’re going to try on the season’s trickiest trends and show everyone, regardless of how curvaceous or svelte they are can wear whatever the heck they want.

This week we’re tackling the sheer trend. You’ve seen it on the catwalks of Valentino, Dior and Molly Goddard as transparent confections, frothy with layers or beaded and embroidered with delicate, whimsical patterns. Admittedly it’s a little scary when you see high-watt stars like Bella Hadid and Beyonce baring it all in ultra-sheer net. While we’d love to walk around like Rihanna in a transparent dress with only teeny pants on, it's just not doable when you have a 9-5 to think of. With a few tweaks, it’s surprisingly doable regardless of your dress size.

Pretty Clear

ASOS, Polo Top With Bright Contrast Stripe,£16; Primark, Blush Mesh Fluted Sleeve Dress, £10; Primark, High Waist Blue Wash Skinny Jean, £13; Boohoo, Maddie Suedette Skinny Barely There Heels, £22

In recent years it’s deeply uncool to look overdone, so when considering the foundations dress down the tulle layer with jeans. A cropped polo will play into the reveal-conceal trend without making you feel too exposed in the daytime.

Hit A Low Key

Gap, Modern Crew Tee, £10.47; Reclaimed Vintage, Maxi T-Shirt Dress With sheer Mesh Layer & Ruffle Cami, £26, ASOS; Primark, Silk Pyjama Bottoms, £10; Nike, Air Force 1 Upstep Premium Trainers In Blue Suede, £85

Layer up like winter’s coming with a simple white t-shirt and silky track pants. Not only do the understated underthings give off a nonchalant air, but they will create a covetable silhouette under those tiers of ballerina net.

Minimise Exposure

ASOS Curve, Camo Shirt With Sequin & Badges, £42; Elvi, Floral Net Dress, £75; Boohoo, Ellie Lace Up Trainer, £15

As Grace Victory shows, a well-placed jacket can change the whole vibe of a sheer dress. Take a look to the next level with a contrast fabric, so you can let the print do the talking.
