When Serena Williams return to tennis after giving birth to her daughter last summer, she wore a Nike catsuit at the French Open. Designed to help with blood clots from which she was suffering at the time, Williams said the outfit made her feel like a "warrior princess". The French Tennis Federation, however, did not agree. After the game, Bernard Giudicelli, president of the French Tennis Federation said: "It's a bit later because the collections are already designed but we are going to nonetheless ask the manufacturers to let us know what is coming. I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena's outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place."
For this year's tournament, Williams decided to come back in style. Collaborating with Off White's Virgil Abloh for the second time (the first Nike outfit Abloh designed for Williams was a tutu), Williams wore a black and white crop top, matching skort and fishnet detail covering Williams' midriff. There was also a cape, emblazoned with the words "Mother, Champion, Queen, Goddess" in French, although Williams did not wear this on the court.
Speaking to US Vogue, Williams said of her latest outfit: "It has words in it in French. It talks about me being a mom and me being a queen, as all women are. A champion. It's positive reinforcement for me, and I kind of love that."
Williams won her first game at the Open against Vitalia Diatchenko, so will now advance to the second stage of the tournament. Fingers crossed this means there will be some more incredible looks to come.
