Self Portrait Pre Fall 2015

Self-Portrait has been on a fast-moving trajectory since launching only four seasons ago. East London-based designer, Han Chong first took a firm hold on the wardrobes of fashion insiders for four very good reasons. 1: His extra-pretty lace and dancer’s mesh dresses were (and still are) perfect for a swanky event. 2: No other label has the same sporty-princess aesthetic, and as testament to this, a Self-Portrait piece is now instantly recognisable. 3: They don’t cost a fortune in comparison to regular designer gear. And 4: Thanks to lower production numbers there’s the added bonus of you probably not experiencing a same-dress debacle.

Self Portrait's celebrity fans include Kristen Stewart, Kerry Washington, Jourdan Dunn, Rachel McAdams, Beyonce and Reese Witherspoon

It wasn’t long until A-listers and their stylists caught onto our top secret, elevating this relatively unknown label into the Hollywood stratosphere. Jourdan Dunn, Kendall Jenner, Kristen Stewart and Rachel McAdams are just a few of the savvy stars in Self Portrait’s fan club. ‘Of course it is good for the brand that celebrities choose to wear Self-Portrait…’ Central St Martins-trained Han tells us, ‘But to be honest I feel equally flattered when I see a normal girl wearing my design at a party or in the street.’

Major stockists like Selfridges, MatchesFashion and Net-A-Porter have followed and we’ve continued to be completely in awe of what is essentially a posh high street label stirring up a red carpet storm. It’s a dream formula few labels have ever achieved and Han is keen to own it. ‘I come from a quite modest background, growing up in Malaysia, and one of the most important things when launching Self-Portrait was to create an attainable range which would still be high quality. Good design shouldn’t just be for a selective few,’ he says. ‘Sometimes it is difficult… it takes a lot of research and trips around the world to find the right materials and techniques. It is possible to combine quality and a reasonable price if you don't turn greedy…’ Well thank goodness for his goodness. It is however completely acceptable to be greedy in terms of bulk orders – so here’s the pre-fall collection you can pre-order online now…
