Every so often a fashion trend causes a shopping frenzy. Do you remember the winter of pink coats? Or, the summer of off-the-shoulder dresses? Well, there’s a new craze in town, and it's very, very specific. So, precise in fact that three brands have made the same dress.
We’re not exaggerating or being hyperbolic: ASOS, curve-label Elvi and H&M have all designed exactly the same piece and are selling it as if it's an own-brand item. It’s really beautiful, so we get it. And, it’s an affordable way to humpback on Valentino and Dior’s sheer, embroidered dress trend.
The frock in question is tailored out of floral embroidered tulle and is worn over a slip. ASOS has tapered their smock with short sleeves, a crew neck and a pinched waist and is selling it for £120. Elvi’s, which costs £75, has a V-neck and an empire waist. H&M’s dress has full sleeves, an empire waist, a plunging neckline and is currently available to buy through the brand’s Indian site. Notably, Zara sold this piece first. While it’s now sold out their floral tulle dress used the same textile, but in black and was priced at £70.
Though the silhouettes may marginally differ, the statement embroidered fabric is exactly the same. Even though we like to think where we shop speaks to who we are and our sense of style, this dress shines a spotlight on just how small the mass-market, high street industry actually is. It shows that the retailers all look to the same factories for affordable-priced fabrics and the same few high-end designer brands for inspiration. So, if you want to buy something that no one else has, you’ll have to dig a lot deeper than these four labels.
