For anyone who thought that, held as a largely virtual event, this year’s Golden Globe awards would be lacking fashion moments – you have been happily proved wrong.
The Globes has always invited bolder, more experimental style statements than the Oscars - don't forget it was at the Globes that 2018's Time's Up blackout happened - and this still proved to be the case, even on a Zoom screen. Moments to note, then? Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) winner Emma Corrin’s Pierrot-inspired Miu Miu gown, Cynthia Erivo’s neon green Valentino haute couture dress and gargantuan silver platforms, Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan’s frothy Molly Goddard frock and highlighter pink eyeshadow.
But there is one woman who is always, always guaranteed to make a style statement: Sarah Paulson. And Ratched’s leading lady did not disappoint. She might have lost out on the night to Corrin, but Paulson definitely wins the Unlikeliest Accessory award.
Working with her long-term stylist Karla Welch, Paulson wore a custom off-the-shoulder Prada dress, finished with shimmering embellishments and a seatbelt buckle belt (Paulson has form with Prada, remember the fluoro green fringed dress she wore to the Ocean’s 8 premiere in 2018?). It was a knockout look in its own right, but the killer detail was the custom purple Prada arm cast she wore with it, as a result of an injury (she posted an Instagram Story hours before the ceremony of her arm in an ice pack with the caption ‘So this happened’). The cast was even finished with the brand’s signature triangular logo plaque and coordinated with her eye makeup. Details, people, details.
Paulson’s trooper spirit feels right for now. This year we’ve all had to accommodate practicality and a safety-first approach into getting dressed (hello, masks!). But there’s a bigger message in there too, about not letting life’s curve balls derail you and making the best out of a bad situation. The show must go on!

Viola Davis
Nominated for her role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Viola Davis struck a power pose in her printed dress from Lavie by CK. The Oscar-winning actor took to her feed the night before the ceremony to say #TimesUpGlobes, addressing the fact that out of 87, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association does not have a single Black member. 'The journey of a Black artist is littered with obstacles in creating, developing and being acknowledged for our work. If we continue to keep silent, the younger generation of artists will have the exact same load to carry. No more excuses. #TIMESUPGlobes #TIMESUP.'
