Most stars, especially those nominated for Academy Awards, play it safe on the promotional trail. Yet, one thing has become very clear this red carpet season, Saoirse Ronan is not one of them.
At just 23-years-old, Ronan has already banked three Oscar nominations (for her roles in Atonement, Brooklyn and Lady Bird) and attended an endless stream of premieres and award ceremonies. Growing up under the glare of the public eye can prove difficult for some A-Listers, but not Saoirse for she’s never made a red carpet misstep. Working with stylist Elizabeth Saltzman (who counts Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophie Turner as clients) obviously hasn’t hurt!
That said, daring choices have become part of her visual vocabulary. Since attending the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2016 in a floral dress by Duoro Olowu that clashed glaringly different colours and prints to create for romantic whimsy started her off on a brave sartorial path.
‘She’s fun and makes choices based on her heart’, her stylist has said. And, it shows. From her Burberry to Saint Laurent choices, she’s never been afraid to experiment with directional codes.
Since the Golden Globe’s all-black dress code has dissolved, her choices have become bolder. She’s taken to following Rooney Mara’s lead and off-set her pale complexion with a wicked dark lipstick. Saoirse's also dipped her toe into tailoring, wowing in a white tuxedo blazer by Calvin Klein suit with Christian Louboutin heels and David Webb jewellery at the Film Critics Circle Awards. Adding pale pink to her repertoire has proved a recipe for success, as she showed in a Michael Kors gown at the Critics Choice Awards and again at the SAG Awards with a Louis Vuitton dress.
'In an age when so many A-listers play it safe, I salute any actress willing to take a risk on the red carpet, which is what Saoirse does so well' explains Laura Antonia Jordan, Grazia's Fashion News And Features Editor, 'thanks to Elizabeth Saltzman she’s really found her groove: femininity with bite. Just look how she gave baby pink attitude in Louis Vuitton, making it subversive rather than saccharine. I also loved her in red and hot pink Gucci (tricky in theory; executed to perfection), and floral Rodarte recently. She manages to pull off that catch 22 task of being fashion-forward in tandem with exuding classic Hollywood glamour, see how she toughened up the Ralph & Russo gown she wore to the Critics’ Choice Awards with gothy black lips. It feels like Saoirse’s really come into herself this awards season – and that’s what makes her brave choices seem so effortless.'
While her style is constantly evolving, one thing is for sure: she’s a fashion star on the rise.
