There’s a new shoe in town, and it’s sure to raise some eyebrows. Saint Laurent has introduced roller skate stilettos. Yeah. They may look somewhat sensational, in a totally bonkers way, and will surely entice die hard Saint Laurent fans, but could anything look more dangerous?
The combination of the stiletto – a difficult shoe to master and insanely uncomfortable – with the roller skate – even harder to master and incredibly dangerous when worn by a non-skater – spells disaster. Heelys seemed precarious enough, and those wheels weren’t four inches off the ground.
Evocative of 1950s American diners, where waitresses would whirl around in roller skates at ease, Saint Laurent has a history of bringing back the roller blading trend with a high fashion edge, yet this time the emphasis on high. Setting you back a cool £1995, the so-called Anya 100 Patch Pump Rollers ultimately raise questions about practicality. Are we about to see people whizzing around streets in them, weaving through each other at train stations at 20mph? (No, thank you.)
Are they about to revolutionise the way we work around the office? The character Jules in the film The Intern rides around her office on a bicycle, making her super agile, so maybe being on wheels is an upcoming wave of workplace efficiency? No desk chairs would be needed, as these shoes would make a case for the standing desk. Not to mention, imagine the workout your legs and abs would be forcibly subject to throughout the day (though we’re not sure our feet could bare the pain).
While it’s difficult to seriously justify the actual usefulness of Saint Laurent’s new roller skate stilettos in any scenario, it’s hard to deny their spectacle and future status as an iconic collector's item. Whether they’ll catch on in some form or not, we don’t know, but we’ll just continue to stare at them for now (and quietly pray we don’t have to brush up on our roller skating prowess, or, lack thereof).
