For the past few years, we've been busy applauding the conservative chicness of Kate Middleton, so it's nice to divert our attention to another, slightly more trend-setting royal, Princess Diana, aka the champion of gingham 'pedal pushers'. Perhaps (OK, we haven't scientifically studied this) last seen in the 'summer' section of The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook (still available, still a fantastic read), gingham trousers were what Boden Mum of the 80s wore before Boden Mum became a bonafide thing.
And now they're back – so much so, that they are our first ever TBT Trend, a new franchise from The Debrief to get your nostalgic juices going.
But before you write off gingham as the print only for a playhouse's tablecloth, give us a chance. It's summer's version of tartan; the check with comes with a sunshiney attitude, if you will. As Portia Freeman illustrates (below), it's easier to do now in black, rather than Diana's very zippy cranberry pink. But that said, if we had the funds, we'd be snapping up Versace's turqouise ones quick smart.
And what to wear with them? It depends whether you want to go cute, or rockabilly. If you like to look girlie, then Diana is your starting point, with boating loafers and a button-down shirt. Pixie Lott also opts for the cute polished thing whenever she wears hers, with pointed stilettos and a crop top. For a more dishevelled take, we suggest laid-back accoutrements, such as an oversized black sweatshirt, or a longline denim waistcoat to set off the gingham print, with a transparent clutch and some backless ankle boots.
