Anyone else feel like we’ve rewound seven years of pop culture? The excitement over the new Kate Moss x Topshop collaboration, which lands in stores nationwide tomorrow, is akin to the sweaty static that was a nation of overexcited teenagers (and women in their twenties and thirties too, let’s be honest) being able to dress like their favourite don’t-give-a-fuck supermodel back in 2007.
Of course, there were collections subsequent to her debut, but none quite reached the lofty heights of both her initial and this, her seventh collection. Time has passed and Kate Moss now has a husband rather than a unpredictable rocker boyfriend by her side – and her clothes have all grown up.
When we say grown-up, though, we don’t mean boring. We mean lady rocker, rather than girlish English rose. Where her first collection was primarily filled with dresses, this one is comprised of separates, with plenty of floaty fringing and wide-cut pants.
But given that you’re probably now in gainful (or otherwise) employment this time around, you probably can’t repeat that 2007 shopping tactic of getting in the Topshop queue at 4am after falling out a club in your university city of choice. Which is why we’ve decided to do the hard work for you.
Here are the bits you’ll probably love from the new collection – based on the pics you made way back then....
Did you bake cupcakes in the floral tea dress?
If the 2007 Kate Moss Topshop collab was Destiny’s Child, then this floral teadress was Beyonce. And by that I mean that it was the most hyped and excitedly received piece of all. I bought it and later sold it on eBay (for a lot of money.) I still regret it. I‘m thinking that if you loved that dress, you’ll love the silky floral pyjama shirt, £50. Pyjama shirts are the shirt of the summer; a little bit louche, but also kind of virginal, it’s as good in day as it is in night.
**Or were you busy being Monroe in the LWD?
**
Kate looked like a blonde bombshell in her one-shouldered white dress. I tried to look like Kate in it and clearly never could. So why not try the white zip front dress, £75, this time around? It's the cute LWD updated into something sassier – because you can pull the zip down or up, as far as you want. Doh! Maybe just pull the zipper down incrementally as the sangria-filled night wears on... Olé.
Perhaps, you died for the black caged cut-out?
I really regret selling this one, too. (Don’t judge me, I might have spent most of my student loan on this collection and then recompensed on lost revenue through eBay.) The caged detail is chic and edgy *all at the same time *while the A-Line shape is all ‘Edie Sedgwick when she felt like putting clothes on’.
It’s mental to think that maxi dresses weren’t really a ‘thing’ back in 2007. Silk floor-length dresses have had a real renaissance (we can’t be the only ones trawling eBay for full-length vintage Ghost slip dresses) and for the teenager in you that’s all grown up, how about this metallic green maxi? So silky. So chicsy. A little more expensive at £295 but wear it to to weddings too (beats the Zara shift, eh?)
Or gave great boobage in the floral bustier dress?
For the va va voomer, this bold poppy print fitted bustier dress was the shit. Very Charlotte Olympia. Retro dresses have sort of given way to palazzo pants though; which is prescient, as you can find these wide-leg floral trousers, £55 in Kate’s new collection. Formerly a skinny jean addict, Kate’s been all over the wide-leg trouser of late. Wear yours with a cropped silk cami.
Maybe, you kept it androgynous in the striped waistcoat?
A staple during her Doherty days, Kate lived by the black waistcoat (often with nothing underneath), black skinny jeans and flat ballet pump combination. Now, of course, she’s all about the heeled ankle boots and suede or leather jackets – which explains this jacket. Suede fringed jackets have been making a slow but strong return via Saint Laurent and this sexy suede fringe jacket, £225, though one of the most expensive pieces in the collection, is a dead ringer for Hedi Slimane’s and will last a lifetime.
Watch the Kate Moss x Topshop big reveal live from Topshop HQ at 6pm tonight.
