It's that time of year where the glossies are filled with new season ad campaigns and we can check out whose beautiful face will be charged with flogging handbags this time around. But while we're used to campaigns fronted by the latest super model with cheekbones carved by angels, this season we're experiencing some pretty unexpected castings.
Yesterday saw the announcement of two major campaign faces - Justin Bieber for Calvin Klein and 80 year old author Joan Didion for Celine. Now there's a contrast. But they're not the only unusual ones. MaxFactor also announced on Monday that Marilyn Monroe would be fronting their spring campaign - and she isn't even alive. Campaign casting are now more newsworthy than the products themselves, as brands try to veer away from using generic models that don't have the social pull of stars and seminal fashion icons, preferring kookier, unexpected faces that attract our attention.
Check out the recent castings and campaigns that have made us go 'huh..?'
Campaigns
Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts was a surprising choice for Givenchy SS15, what with so much buzz about Kendall Jenner walking in the show back in September. But when you think about it, it makes sense - not only does Roberts look awesome, but she's the same age as women who can actually afford to buy Givenchy things. Unless you're a 23 year old Kardashian.
Joan Didion
Check out 80 year old American author Joan Didion, who is the face of Celine's SS15 collection. She might not be what we expected, but that's because Phoebe Philo tends to be one step ahead of everyone, always. And let's be honest, Joan looks damn cool.
Nikki Minaj
Hippity-hoppity Nikki Minaj's get-up is less risque than usual in her advert for Roberto Cavalli's SS15 collection. We didn't really have her down as the floaty dress kinda gal, but there you have it. We're surprised. Which is probably the point.
The Biebster
Justin Bieber stripped to his heavily branded waistband for Calvin Klein, and in some of the images even has Lara Stone draped over his tattooed bod. Aside from the fact that Bieber is way more inked than we actually realised, it's also a tad odd that we're supposed to believe that Stone, whose husband is 43, would be interested in the king of tweens.
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
Kimye did their best serious fashion faces for the new Balmain campaign, entitled 'Army of Lovers'. Probably why in one image Kim is grabbing Kanye's face about to suck it off, but we have no idea why she's also pictured lying upside down on a car, as if Kanye is going to use her as a sponge.
Marilyn Monroe
Monroe still basically holds the title of most beautiful woman ever, so on the one hand it's not that weird that she's the new face of MaxFactor, but was there no-one else alive that might have been good enough for the job? Apparently not.
Gigi Hadid
Sure, she's ridiculously beautiful, but that's not the first thing that hits you when you see Gigi Hadid's new campaign for Guess. WHERE ARE HER NIPPLES?! It's a see-through crochet dress, but she is nip-free. Nipples apparently don't exist in ad-land.
