Queen of the Met Gala? Some would say Anna Wintour, others would say Rihanna. The singer-slash-mogul knows how to dial up the drama like no one else (the most powerful fashion editor in the world included). She loves dressing to the theme - who could forget the bedazzled miter she wore for Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination? - so what did she choose for yesterday's red carpet?
Naturally, Rihanna arrived last to the cream carpet with blooming bump and beau A$AP Rocky - but it was all worth the wait, of course. Whilst everyone else had already cleared the carpet, the couple stepped out onto the Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs wearing custom looks that paid tribute to designer Karl Lagerfeld, the honouree of the evening.
In a nod to her Met Gala looks of the past, Rihanna opted for another seemingly endless train that spanned the length of the steps. The look itself, a custom Valentino gown, paid tribute Lagerfeld's work for Chanel in expert fashion and fitted perfectly with the evening's bridal-esque trend. The ivory white gown and matching cape were adorned with giant hand-crafted camellia floral appliques - a Coco Chanel signature that has since become synonymous with the house - finished off with pearl earrings, yet more camellias, and a bold red lip. And for the final flourish? A pair of white cat-eye sunglasses adorned with 3D false eyelashes, what else? In a masterclass of maternity dressing, the star then undid the floral cape to reveal her growing baby bump. Bravo.
In another nod to the evening's theme, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, A$AP stepped out in a seemingly more casual custom Gucci ensemble. Dressed in embellished jeans, white shirt and black suit jacket - the rapper paid homage to the designer by wearing a tartan kilt, a favourite piece of Lagerfelds. Accessorising with multiple Gucci belts and a leather tie (another favourite of Lagerfeld's) A$AP certainly nailed the theme.
This is a couple that are always worth the wait.
