Things-You-Have

If you’ve already purged twitter of those annoying fashion people who fill up your feed with blurry catwalk shots and endless pairs of shoes you’re never going to be able to afford, we feel your pain. But here’s a New York Fashion Week story we reckon you’ll like: catwalk looks from clothes you blatantly already have stuffed somewhere in your wardrobe. So it’s time to dig out that floral dress et al your mum’s been banging on at you for ages to chuck out, and re-wear it with suitable smugness.

1. Navy coat + furry gilet = DKNY

Whether it’s a pea or a duffle, we’re pretty sure you’ll have a navy coat of some description. Just layer the fluffy gilet you probably bought in Topshop this Winter over the top and you have DKNY nailed. Go all out by wearing with a New Era cap.

2. A fancy top + loose sporty trousers = Alexander Wang

Ok, your top might not be made from expensive astrakhan fur and your trousers may not be the finest leather, but you can still totally pull off this look - and in a more animal friendly way. Just get out your glitziest party t-shirt and wear with some swishing loose black trousers. Exaggeratedly combed over and gelled hair optional.

3. A novelty sweatshirt + pleated skirt = Calla

A nice outfit you could pep up your work wardrobe with. Take the novelty sweatshirt you usually wear with skinny jeans at the weekend and step it up a notch with the midi skirt you wore to death in summer 2011.

4. A Folksy floral dress + biker boots= Preen Line

It might be buried in dark depths of your wardrobe or you might have bought the H&M x Isabel Marant one, but chances are you’ve got a floral dress like this lurking about somewhere. Wear with your biker boots and you will be just like the girls from Preen’s easy, breezy diffusion range.

5. A slinky black dress + clompy boots= Opening Ceremony

Probably didn’t need a catwalk to tell us this was a good look but it’s nice to have the high fashion back-up anyway. If you’ve got something with a slit, that’ll look extra perfect.

6. A sporty t-shirt + printed trousers= Ostwald Helgason

A baseball vest/ tee might not be something you’ve got already but it’s worth getting one as they’ve already been anointed the summer tee to wear by discerning fashion folk. ASOS have a good one with added meshy bits. Printed trousers have been a thing for so long no doubt you’ve found a pair you like by now.

7. A Polo neck + mini skirt + brogues = Victoria Beckham

Not saying is has to be all white like this though that would be cool. If you don’t have a polo neck yet, then can we just say they are actually one of the most useful items you could own right now - great for all those high-necked, Celine-type looks which everyone is doing. Tuck your hair in to look super fashion-y. American Apparelhave one in every colour.

8. A floral slip dress = Peter Som

If you haven’t bought one of these yet then get on it because it is going to be all about looking a bit like Courtney Love c.1991 and for that you will need a slip, either floral or silky. Vintage stores are your best bet.

9. A crisp white shirt + leather mini= Coach

The guy who used to head up that bag company you can’t pronounce Loewe, Stuart Vevers is now at Coach. And his first show in NY yesterday was all about big coats, snow boots and some really awesome hats. The shearling jacket is on our fantasy shopping list but in the meantime we’ll be wearing a crisp white shirt untucked with a leather mini peeking out from underneath. Add a fedora hat if you fancy it.

10. Your boyfriend/brother’s hoodie + leggings = Rag & Bone

The most unbelievable of all the looks-you-really-do-already-have is Rag and Bone’s big slouchy hoodie plus leggings. Comfy and catwalk-y all at the same time, amiright?
