Here's a riddle for you. Rita Ora, Annie Lennox, Alek Wek, Emma Thompson and Fashion East's Lulu Kennedy are all hanging out together. Guess where?
The Vanity Fair Oscar party? Wrong. They're all in M&S's new SS14 Leading Ladies campaign line-up! A pretty awesome roster of funky ladies, right?
But really, we shouldn't be too surprised. M&S has long been on a gradual and not unsuccessful mission to supercool itself up since new style director Belinda Earl came on board in 2012. And it's working: the stuff in store is good. Even if it is still rather hard to find.
So we've spent today doing the hard work and finding the pieces in M&S that are great - but aren't just cashmere and, er, comfy shoes.
1. Some saucy negligee
You know how you always thought that when you grew up, you'd buy some sexy negligee to waft around your quarters (ok, box room) in? Well, now you're grown up. And you've learn how to pronounce 'negligee'. And there's some seriously sexy stuff at M&S. So there are no excuses left! Rosie for Autograph is M&S's mega-seller for a reason. We love this Pure Silk Chemise Nightdress With French Designed Lace, £55.20.
2. Yet another pair of black suede ankle boots
But hold on - these aren't just any black suede ankle boots (sorrynotsorry)... these Suede Ankle Boots with Insolia, £44 (Insolia just means very comfortable soles) are a dead ringer for the Rag & Bone Newbury boots, as loved by Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller and Gwyneth Paltrow. Plus, there's some very Marques Almeida-esque fraying going on. Plus they're less than £50. Winners.
3. A sporty sequin shift dress
Sequins can be really hard to do when you're not into the 'pretty pretty' thing, right? Think sporty shapes. This midi length Speziale Sequin Embellished Shift Dress, £95.20 covered in mint green sequins is almost athletic, but still smart enough to be weddingwear. And a party dress. Wooplah. It's our new saviour.
4. A zippy leather pencil skirt
We know this is a really mumsy thing to say, but every wardrobe should have a good leather skirt. And a good pair of leather trousers. And a good leather biker jacket. Anyway, let's start with the skirt. This zip-strewn asymmetric Speziale Leather Pencil Skirt, £159.20 (this 'speziale' thing sounds like a new species of spaghetti) reminds us of the Saint Laurent one. You can't beat M&S for quality, especially when it comes to something decent like leather. Listen to your mam on this one - she knows shit like that.
5. A Barbie pink silk shirt
Looks like an Equipment shirt, feels like an Equipment shirt, costs NOT like an Equipment shirt. Hurrah. There's nothing lusher than a Best of British Pure Silk Blouse, £79.20 - to provide luxe respite from when you're viscose cheap one is just too sweat-worthy to even contemplate.
