The Undeniable Appeal Of The Impractical Neon Slip Skirt

It's a love-hate relationship

The midi slip skirt is a trend that keeps on giving. Instagram (and half the Grazia office) got behind it last year thanks to that sellout Topshop style. Available in a rainbow of hues, said Topshop skirt has now been reinvented across the high street in array of styles, colours and patterns. The latest to catch our attention (it’s hard to miss) is a neon number courtesy of ASOS.

Having done the catwalk rounds for the past few seasons, highlighter-inspired shades are growing in popularity. While head-to-toe neon is certainly reserved for the sartorially brave, this trend can be wearable and the slinky ASOS slip skirt (£28) is an excellent starting point.

As proven by a number of notable influencers, this skirt can be easily dialled down with neutral tones, chunky knits or casual trainers.

While it wins points for versatility, practically it’s a little trickier. The annoying and unavoidable static situation means wearing with tights is impossible. While you can try a hack like spritzing your tights with hairspray, or braving bare legs, it's not the effortless style it appears to be.

Also, washing is problematic. One wash gone wrong and you might find yourself with an entirely green-tinged wardrobe. As ASOS points out, you’re best of hand-washing in cold water or spot-cleaning stains with a toothbrush if you want to keep your neon bright and your whites white.

Much like silk shirts, cashmere sweaters and linen dresses, it’s both high maintenance and time-consuming when it comes to laundry admin. Great in photos but less so when you have to navigate your commute/day at the office/night out while avoiding any spillages.

Which raises the age old-dilemma: is it really worth the commitment? It’s a torturous toss-up and one we’re on the fence on.
