Natalie Portman’s Style Evolution

Natalie Portman first graced our screens back in 1994, as a 12-year-old assassin's protégé in Leon. Cue cult movie saga Star Wars and most recently, critically acclaimed Jackie, and Portman successfully cemented her status as one of Hollywood's starlets.

Of course, one job that comes hand in hand with the responsibility of working in the film industry is the duty of attending premieres. But by now, Portman has become a fully-fledged expert in the art of red carpet going and her wardrobe is undoubtedly a reflection of this.

With a penchant for ballgown skirts, minimalist sheath dresses and lipstick red garments, the actress knows what works well for her. And French fashion house Dior plays a huge role in the creation of her inimitable aesthetic, as she often calls on the designer brand for red carpet assistance.

So in celebration of her inimitable wardrobe, we reflect on her style evolution from her first red carpet appearances in the nineties to her most recent sartorial triumphs...

An On-Screen Style Icon

Just reflect on the sartorial influence newly released Jackie has had on audiences. As soon as the teaser trailer was leaked, we took to Google to excessively pin countless retro Jackie O images. We were intrigued by the mysterious history of the 'Chanel' pink suit and were drawn to the story behind the former First Lady's iconic wardrobe, all courtesy of Portman's visually stimulating portrayal of the past political figure.

But Portman made her film debut on our screens back in 1994, as she portrayed an assasin's accomplice in Leon. On reflection, we lust over the cult nineties accessories that were considered a staple back in the day. We're talking velvet chokers, crochet beanies and that iconic crop cut.

Her Maternity Style

Portman undoubtedly rivals Blake Lively when it comes to red carpet bump dressing. For her first pregnancy, Portman opted for bright hues.

This time around, the actress notably chose more minimal shades - favouring cream and black.

Our favourite fashion moment? Most recently, Portman attended the SAG Awards in a Dior sheath dress with puffed-up sleeves. That's one major trend ticked off.

Colour Blocking

You may consider colour blocking to be the sartorial art form of Insta bloggers but Natalie was coveting the trend back in 1996 aged just 15. For the premiere of Mars Attacks!, the young actress donned head-to-toe green with co-ordinating accessories and all.

Fast forward to the 2012 Golden Globes and Portman worked colour-blocking once more, opting for the highly coveted pink and red juxtaposition.

Nineties Denim

Two decades ago, the fashion rules on the red carpet were a little more flexible. We’re talking tees layered beneath slip dresses, barely there makeup and of course the cult accessory - the denim jacket.

Back in 1998, the fledgling star paired a knee-skimming dress with a classic buttoned-up cover-up. Satin courts and an embellished shopper accessorised the quintessentially nineties get-up.

The Drop-Waist

Ah, the noughties silhouette which accentuated the bohemian style we all sought to imitate. Influenced by the likes of boho know-it-alls such as Sienna Miller, the fashion crowd quickly adopted chunky circle belts, floor skimming skirts and of course, the drop-waist.

Portman opted for a white Chloé dress to the 2005 Golden Globe Awards where she picked up the the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Closer. Throw in a double-layered bead necklace and side-swept fringe and you can't get more noughties than that.

Ruffles

Before Portman established her love of minimal silhouettes and monochrome sheath dresses, the actress experimented in the fashion department. Yes, we're referring to the ruffles. Back in 2008, Portman donned a wine red cold-shoulder Christian Lacroix gown to the premiere of The Other Boleyn Girl.

In the same year, the actress opted for even more ruffles in a strapless red dress by Lanvin to the premiere of Che at Cannes Film Festival.
