Who is Nastassja Kinski?
Born in Berlin in 1961 to Ruth Brigitte Tocki and controversial German actor Klaus Kinski, Nastassja Kinski is a former actress and model; an icon of her time. She embarked on her career in her teens and has appeared in more than 60 films, most notably the Italian romance Stay As You Are (1978) and Roman Polanski’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles adaptation, Tess (1979), for which she won a Golden Globe. There were reports that the then 15-year-old Nastassja and then 43-year-old director Roman Polanski were romantically involved, but she denied these claims stating, ‘There was a flirtation. There could have been a seduction, but there was not. He had respect for me.’
She also starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s romantic musical One From The Heart (1982), which was her first US film. Although she had begun to achieve international recognition as an actress, she said, ‘To be successful for a moment because of one movie doesn’t mean anything.’
In 1984 she married Egyptian filmmaker Ibrahim Moussa and together had two children: Alijosha, born in 1984 and Sonja, born in 1986. The two divorced in 1992 and later that year she married musician Quincy Jones for three years. Together the pair had a daughter, Kenya Miambi Sarah Jones, who is the half sister of actress Rashida Jones. Both Nastassja’s daughters have worked as models, but it is Kenya who is making it big in 2017, appearing in the Miu Miu campaign.
In 2001 Nastassja revealed in an interview that she suffers with the sleep disorder narcolepsy.
Nastassja Kinski As A Fashion Icon
With big eyes, a strong jawline and plump pout, it's no wonder that Nastassja was quickly noted as a beautiful face in the modelling and film industry. In 1981 she appeared on the cover of Vogue with a Burmese python coiled around her naked body, photographed by Richard Avedon. The issue was a best-seller and was what confirmed her status as a sex symbol.
Film-wise, her appearance in Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas (1984) propelled her to big-time stardom, and she quickly relocated to Hollywood. The iconic fluffy scarlet sweater look from this film is what put Nastassja’s on-screen style on the sartorial map.
Nastassja's character, Jane, rocked messy blunt-cut blonde bob in the film. She has also had a pixie cut for other film roles including One From The Heart and even straight-cut bangs, proving she can make any hairstyle work.
It is perhaps her naturally big, mid-parted hair that makes her look so enviable. We want to recreate it.
