So far in Christmas ad land we’ve had a penguin finding love in a box (thanks John Lewis) and Romeo Beckham kicking through the snow as a faux Santa Claus, but there hasn’t exactly been much we could... how should we put this? Relate to.

Step forward Mulberry’s Christmas ad campaign. Which is all about that strange but totally true competitiveness you feel about getting your gifts right at festive season.

The TV advert, which was created by clever creative company Adam & EveDDB, shows the sister, boyfriend and mum of a girl each competing to impress her with their presents, from a puppy that waves, to a handpainted portrait and a full-on unicorn. Yes, we said unicorn.

But it’s granny who aces it, giving her granddaughter a hibiscus pink Bayswater bag. ‘Finding the perfect Christmas gift for the ones you love is always a difficult task – we wanted to find a light-hearted way of reminding people that you can never go far wrong with Mulberry,’ a Mulberry spokesperson explained.

Before you get all cynical here, you’ve got to admit that the clever Mulberry folk have tapped into something that seems to happen every Christmas morning. You know the one, where your mum has spent the last 11 months compiling a stocking full of heartfelt and handmade gifts, only for your dad to pull out the big guns with an iPad mini he bought for you on Christmas Eve, complete with a Mulberry leather case. It’s not right. It’s not in the Christmas spirit. But we know which one you’ll start playing with straight away.

So, with a new collection of Christmas gifts launching today, competitive family members should take note: we prefer Mulberry handbags to paintings. (But we wouldn’t say no to a unicorn, either.)
