The early noughties could, for people of a certain sensibility (i.e those preoccupied with things of a sartorial nature) be defined by the phenomenon that was the It bag. And nobody did It bags better than Mulberry, who inspired manic frenzy in a host of Alexa Chung fans desperate to get their hands on her handbag-shaped namesake. There's also, of course, the Bayswater – a classic that has just been reinvented thanks to an exciting new collaboration between the British brand and Acne Studios.
Acne, of course, is no stranger to an It bag, either. The Swedish label's Musubi bag – which you will recognise thanks to its distinctive origami knot – was a repeated sell-out success, seen on the arm of every fashion insider in the business. For this new collaboration, the two powerhouses decided to combine the two bag icons, creating a Musubi Bayswater (and, presumably, a stampede in the process).
Jonny Johansson, creative director of Acne Studios, said 'This is a collection about friendship and freedom as brands to do what we want to do. It is like a conversation between Acne Studios and Mulberry, one that is founded in mutual respect and a desire to make great product.'
It's not just the Bayswater, either – there are Messenger bags with buckle details, too, available in a range of sizes and colours. 'There is pure Swedishness and Englishness to the collection that I think twists the look in an interesting way. I like how they are practical and you also want to carry them. It feels good to make bags that are desirable and that also have purpose,' said Johansson. There's also a range of accessories, including a laptop case and coin purse, all in either Scotchgrain or pink leather.
Thierry Andretta, CEO of Mulberry, said: 'The Acne Studios and Mulberry collaboration is a perfect manifestation of the spirit of both our brands. It showcases Acne Studios’ wonderful Swedish design ethos and celebrates both the British heritage and modernity of Mulberry.'
Given the loyal following amassed by both fashion houses, it's likely that this collection will be a huge hit. So, if you're already compiling your Christmas list, you may want to start here.
