Michaela Coel, creator of this summer’s smash-hit show I May Destroy You, has a unique red carpet formula. While other actor-writer-directors might look through options with a stylist, flicking through an edited rail and choosing one gown or another, Coel whips up her own creations - or wears something made by her mum.

For 2018’s Black Panther premiere, Coel wore a plunging green-and-red print dress. According to [Glamour](https://www.glamour.com/story/michaela-coel-made-her-own-dress-for-the-black-panther-premierepremiere), she tweeted that it was actually two skirts, bought from a stall outside Ghana’s Accra Mall, which she snipped apart and stitched into a dress with just two hours to go until the premiere.

The rainbow-coloured gown she wore to 2016’s British Academy Television Awards, meanwhile, was one of her mum’s creations. According to Buzzfeed, Coel, who won best female performance for a comedy programme with Chewing Gum, wrote on Instagram: ‘Thank you Mummy. She's actually a nurse, and occasionally does the clothes thing as a hobby...don't think she was quite ready for the amount of love for the dress 😂.’

The kente cloth minidress, a nod to her Ghanian heritage, has become something of a signature. She wore another plunging number, this time in maroon-and-white, with ruffled sleeves to the British Independent Film Awards in 2018, and has sported a sleeveless fuschia style twice, first with strappy sandals and then slipped over a white shirt.

But while dresses might be her mainstay - always with a curveball accessory like trainers or lace-up hiking boots - she’s also a fan of separates. For this year’s Prince's Trust Awards, Coel chose sharp knee-length shorts and chunky mock-croc loafers. For 2019’s Elle party, she proved that head-to-toe black is still a fresh outfit formula, wearing a polo neck, skinny jeans and square-toed heels.
