Scrolling through the Met Gala’s best dressed lists from last night you might wonder, “Was this an Andrew LLoyd Webber production?”. And rightfully so. The answer is no. It was, of course, just Doja Cat, Jared Leto and Lil Nas X dressed as, well, cats.
Cats, you shrug? Yes, cats, but not any old feline. They were paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld in their very own way, nodding to his most treasured possession: his Birman cat, Choupette.
The three creatives embodied the fabulous feline in different ways: while Doja Cat (see what she did there) stepped out with face prosthetics, looking like an extra in the 2019 film adaptation of the Broadway musical, it was Leto’s full furry cat suit including a cat mascot hat that sent the internet into a puss-induced spiral. As for Lil Nas X, he took a more minimalist approach, wearing nothing but a silver thong and a crystal cat mask – whiskers and all. Ok, not minimalist but purist, perhaps, as he was painted silver and covered in pearls and crystals.
Tributes that the 12-year-old cat, who has not only appeared on Vogue covers but is allegedly one of the main beneficiaries of her late owner’s will, would surely approve of. Just before the Met Gala, Choupette had a meeting with Kim Kardashian to help her inspire her red carpet look, so, it’s only fair she got some recognition as fashion’s hardest-working pet.
