It’s one of the biggest nights in the fashion calendar, bringing together stars from the worlds of film, art, style and music, and now the Met Gala is the subject of the most enlightening fashion documentary since The September Issue.

Last year, filmmaker Andrew Rossi followed legendary US Vogue editor Anna Wintour and the Met Museum’s Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton (who also co-curated the Alexander McQueen retrospective, 'Savage Beauty') as they planned the legendary event, which marks the opening of the Met’s spring costume exhibition. The result is The First Monday In May, which promises a peek behind the scenes at last year’s ‘China: Through The Looking Glass’ event.

A newly released trailer for the film (which is due to premiere on the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival) features a slew of industry heavyweights like Wintour and her former Vogue colleague Andre Leon Talley – who aptly describes the Met Ball as ‘the Superbowl of fashion events – alongside glimpses of A-listers like Beyoncé, Cara Delevingne and Rihanna (wearing that unforgettable ‘omelette’ dress…)
There’s also an intriguing insight into the politics of the gala’s seating plan (and you thought family weddings were bad?), as well as a fleeting shot of an email with the subject line: ‘Do you have a second to chat re: Rihanna’s budget?’ If only our day-to-day work email chains were half as star-studded…
