When it was revealed that this year's Met Gala theme would be Camp: Notes on Fashion, it was almost as if Lady Gaga herself had chosen it. Based on the Susan Sontag essay, Notes on Camp, the Gala is being hosted by Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, Gaga and – of course – Gaga herself, the event promises to be a visual spectacular of outrageous dresses and over-the-top entrances. But Gaga truly over-delivered, even by her standards.

Arriving with an entire entourage of men in tuxedos carrying black umbrellas, Gaga was wearing a voluminous, fuchsia gown designed by Brandon Maxwell, who accompanied her on the red (or, more accurately, pink) carpet. There were bows galore, as Gaga stopped to pose while her entourage gave life to her dress, which billowed around her.

She ascended the steps before walking right back to the bottom where Maxwell helped her out of her dress, revealing a black strapless gown underneath. This then gave way to a plain, fuchsia column gown, which Gaga eventually removed to reveal a black sequin bra, knickers and fishnet tights.

She pulled a pink trolley laden with transparent bags filled with champagne (as seen on the Brandon Maxwell catwalk for SS19). She lay on the famous Met steps in her underwear. She pretended to be on the phone, she applied lipstick, she kissed Maxwell several times.

She wore eyelashes that possibly came with their own health and safety rules. In short, Lady Gaga got the memo. And she turned up.
As one of the first on the pink carpet, we pity the poor person who has to follow Gaga's performance. The Met Gala has begun.
