Billy Porter Was Carried Into The Met Gala By 6 Broadway Actors

Mere moments after basking in the fabulous entrance of Lady Gaga came Billy Porter. And, quite frankly, it was epic. Porter arrived in an incredible ensemble by New York design duo The Blonds, carried like a 2019 Cleopatra by six shirtless Broadway actors. Of course he was.

Bringing the spirit of Ball culture to the Met's pink carpet, Porter wore a bejewelled jumpsuit, but the crowning glory of his outfit was the 10-foot gold wings he sported. There was a 24-karat gold headpiece and matching gold boots (of course there were). According to Porter, his main inspirations were indeed Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra, as well as the costumes made for Cher by Bob Mackie.

The Blonds designers told Vogue that the whole ensemble took "several months to create. The catsuit was embellished by hand . . . with a mix of Preciosa crystals and chain fringe, as well as gold bugle beads. This is meant to emulate the rays of the sun as they catch and move the light. The wing cape is an archival piece, and it is comprised of gold baguettes, crystals, and beads, all anchored with caviar beads. Each wing was made to look three dimensional by using tube beads as stilts to raise certain areas. In all, Billy will be wearing well over a million crystals, beads, and chains!”

Given that Gaga and Porter were two of the first to arrive at the Met Gala, we can't wait to see what the rest of the evening has in store.
