The most exciting thing we’ve come to expect from most men on the red carpet is a petrol blue suit or perhaps an oddly-shaped hat (ahem, Pharrell). That’s why this year’s Grammy Awards is likely to go down in history as the night men peacocked like they’ve never peacocked before, with a series of OTT looks that - gasp! - almost stole the spotlight from Ariana Grande andthattulle gown.
Billy Porter led the pack, wearing a turquoise bodysuit and matching bolero by Baja East. So far, so amazing, but that wasn’t the half of it. He also took the opportunity to have his very own Sia moment, with a fringed hat of what looked like silver tinsel by Sarah Sokol that automatically parted like a pair of bead curtains in front of photographers.
Forget women and men, the Pose star has proved that he’s one of the most fearless dressers on the red carpet period, wearing a strapless gown for the SAG Awards and covering his collarbone in butterfly tattoos.
One of the night's biggest talking points in terms of outfits came courtesy of Lil Nas X. The rapper arrived in full cowboy regalia - think stetson, Cuban-heeled boots and body harness - in fluro pink by Versace.
Meanwhile, the classic two-piece had several makeovers, starting with Lucky Daye, who choose a satin trouser suit in spearmint green by Grayscale for last night’s ceremony, and Labrinth, who came swathed in scarlet Balmain.
Shawn Mendes won the best body jewellery category for the pearl chain looped through his Louis Vuitton waistcoat buttonholes, while Tyler, The Creator appeared in what can best be described as a bellboy uniform (very The Grand Budapest Hotel, no?) complete with matching suitcase.
This move among men towards what can only be described as fashion fluency must be down to the likes of Harry Styles, Timothee Chamalat and, of course, Billy Porter, who between them have championed wide-leg flares, bedazzled harnesses and feathered trains on the red carpet. Ladies, you’ve been warned.
