For yesterday's surprise appearance on The Ellen Show, Meghan Markle managed to make a combination we all have in our wardrobes look rather radiant. The Duchess arrived wearing one of her signatures - slim-fit cigarette pants - and a white blouse with cut-out details on the balloon sleeves from Oscar de la Renta.
The look was an elevated version of the 'white shirt and black trousers' that you would reach for every time you needed to look 'smart' as a teenager (although yours probably wouldn't have cost four figures) or when you worked catering shifts to pay your way through uni. Markle's version looks a lot more slick, naturally, which is probably due to the proportions (slim as opposed to slouchy) and silhouette of the sleeve.
If you'd prefer the style of a white shirt -Markle's personal favourite is from With Nothing Underneath - tweak the shape of the trousers slightly to avoid waiter territory. & Other Stories has the best selection of black trousers on the high street. I love the Flared Patch Pocket Trousers, which sit high on the waist and flare gently to the ankle, as well as the Front Slit Trousers, which have a cheeky split at the front of the foot. Piece of White, a shirting brand based in Turkey, should be your go-to for white blouses with a point of difference (there's a great selection on The Outnet).
