Since she first started dating Prince Harry in 2016, it was inevitable that everything Meghan Markle wears would be discussed, debated and decoded. Nobody has ever understood the power of her platform more than Markle herself, however, from the Misha Nonoo ‘Husband’ shirt she wore to the Invictus Games right up to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg tribute T-shirtand mask she opted for recently.
If there is a ‘strategy’ she employs (although that might be too cynical a way of putting it) it is to use her position to champion causes she believes in – from supporting women designers to showing allegiance to her adopted home country.

Sustainable brands also have a regular gig in Markle’s wardrobe (Stella McCartney, Gabriela Hearst, Veja, DeMellier). Cuyana, a direct-to-consumer label with the mantra is ‘fewer, better things’, is another favourite. Appearing at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Next Gen Virtual Summit this week, she opted for a pair of the brand’s geometric Luna earrings – showing she, like Kate Middleton, has grasped that great accessories maketh the Zoom look. Crafted from three separate pieces so they can be worn in myriad ways (clever!), we don’t think this will be the last time we’ll see them.
According to Cuyana, the brand is focused on creating ‘timeless collections for the modern woman through carefully selected fabrics, precise silhouettes and attention to detail’ – in other words, very Meghan. No wonder she’s turned to label several times before. The black Classic Structured Leather Tote has been a repeat hit, she took the Le Sud Weekender bag to her baby shower in New York and packed the brand’s blush pink Mini Chain Saddle bag for the Australian tour in 2018.
Indeed, Cuyana is something of a secret triple-threat brand for Markle. Not only is it sustainable, but the prices are democratic and it is a female-founded business. All in all, a very smart move.
