Flashback Friday To The Matrix, An Unlikely Style Icon

Leather trenchcoat, yes please

The Matrix Was More Stylish Fashion

Given fashion’s unrelenting desire to look to the future it’s funny how on the money a film from 1999 can feel right now. At the time The Matrix hacked its way to mainstream success with action-packed choreography and a baffling sci-fi narrative, but 18 years later it’s trending again. In the years since its release scientists have been working hard to prove its head-starching concept could actually be true, while its sartorial standing became sorely overlooked. But, not anymore as it’s dominatrix-lite fashion has become catwalk inspiration for Demna Gvsalia’s Balenciaga. Between the second skin leather and the full-length trench coats, we wouldn’t mind finding some of Neo and Morpheus’s clothes in our wardrobe.

Patent Trenchcoat

It’s hard to make a subtle entrance in a sweeping, floor-length patent leather trench. But, when you’re armed with two guns and a dose of Trinity’s ‘tude does it matter?

Bondage Steeze

Looking very Raf Simons, Neo favoured trousers with more belts than strictly speaking necessary.

Second Skin Leather

Damn could Trinity wear the hell out of skintight leather. Her bodycon trousers and top had 1990s minimalism on lock down.

Sci-Fi Specs

Itsy bitsy black sunglasses are the anti-Raybans causing a stir this summer. Street style fodder like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Gilda Ambrosio are already fans.

Morpheus’ Earthy Neutrals

Contrary to what everyone thinks The Matrix cast more than just black trench coats and sunglasses. See, Morpheus made understated basics look as slick as a patent leather top.

Slick Tailoring

Why do baddies always have the best tailoring? Agent Smith matched his sharp suit to his stern personality, and we’re there for it.

Oxblood Outerwear

Can we take a collective second to appreciate Jada Pinkett Smith in her oxblood crocodile -stamped leather jacket. Sigh.

Distressed Knitwear

Yeezy, is that you? Neo’s ripped, ragged beige sweater has the dystopian, counter-fashion feels of Kanye’s OG Adidas collection.
