She’s the Manhattanite powerhouse who turned her personal ethos for getting dressed into a viable business. Now Leandra Medine, the founder and CEO of Man Repeller, whose outfits are as big on fun as they are on Instagram fans, is bringing her secret sauce to the high street. Her Mango collaboration drops on 30 October - and her following, 2.2m-strong on Instagram, will be thrilled with its Medine-ness.
‘I think my style is best described as basic, but insane,’ she tells me over email. ‘I thrive on taking regular clothes that are distinctly wearable in the context of everyday life and making them feel special.’ I don’t know about ‘insane’, but plenty of the collection’s otherwise pared-back pieces have been given a maximalist touch that is classic Medine.
A grey button-down comes with fringed cuffs, a pair of denim shorts have pearl-encrusted pockets and a pinafore comes with flower-power embroidery. You can totally imagine Leandra, or a member of her whip-smart staff for that matter, wearing the last entry with a polo neck and lace-up brogues. Or with a cable-knit cardigan and knee-high suede boots.
The sense of fun is palpable - and that will surely go down well with the #MangoGirls. How does Medine sum up the brand’s customer? ‘She’s committed to her own style and doesn’t take herself too seriously.’
Medine describes her go-to outfit as ripped jeans, a denim shirt, a pair of tan suede loafers and a satin clutch, but she’s worn much more ‘extra’ items in the past, including striped silk surf shorts, knitted balaclavas, tie-dye T-shirts and heaps of anklets, and tells me she’s looking forward to wearing ‘suspenders, formal sweatpants and knee-high boots’ this winter. Does she have any outfit-related regrets? ‘Never regret,’ she says. ‘Every outfit has a time and place.’
