‘What is black, hairy and lurks on eight legs?’ This might not be a question you’d expect to find in a high-fashion brand’s lookbook - and neither is, ‘What if you knew you weren’t alone?’ - but Louis Vuitton has taken a nouveau approach to its pre-fall 2020 imagery.
Its creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere, joined by a host of power women that includes Chloe Grace Moretz, Alicia Vikander, Laura Harrier, Jennifer Connelly and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, has taken inspiration from the covers of sci-fi novels for his latest lookbook.
The results are a ‘book’ series, with appropriately dramatic names like The Deceit, The Devil’s Mansion, The Escape Room and The Vanishers, that feature dragons, rockets, skeletons and all manner of mythical beasts. The vibe is somewhere between Strangers Things and the creep-tastic cover of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist, which, naturally, is printed on one of the collection’s T-shirts.
You don’t need to know anything about sci-fi to be sure that there’s plenty of goosebump-worthy pieces to shop in this collection when it drops in May. There’s also takeaway styling tips in the meantime. Why not slip a spangled slip dress over your sci-fi T-shirt? Or add a cameo brooch to the lapel of your shoulder-robed camel coat?
There’s also snow boots to consider, which are worn with the pleated wallpaper-print skirts, and blue-green tartan tights. And remember the strapline on Laura Harrier's cover if in doubt. ‘She’s always played by the rules. Now it’s time to let her instincts into the game.’ Translation? There's nothing to be scared of next season.
