5 Of The Most Ridic Things That Happened At LFW

As London Fashion Week has come to a close, now is the time fashion editors (me) to digest the trends and tell readers (you) what’s hot and what’s not for next season. But, I’m going to level with you, some of what I saw was just plain ludicrous. Maybe, it’s because these designers were so ahead of the times I was thinking of what I want to wear spring 2018 while they were setting 2022’s trends. Or, more likely, they deep dived into a conceptual headspace that has no room for purpose or logic. Here are the top five ridic things that happened at London Fashion Week:

1. Bubble Skirts Are Back

Ludicrous-Fashion-LFW-Bubble-Skirt

Say hello to the skirt that haunts your memories of secondary school. I thought we all agreed bubble skirts with their tucked up hems and bulky silhouette were unflattering and unsightly. Then why the heck is Mary Katrantzou trying to make them happen again?

2. Mops As A Fashion Accessory

From the man who gave the world jewel-encrusted Crocs comes high-fashion mops. Strands of said household tool dangled from earrings and fell like fringing from shoes. Think of it as a cleaning timesaver.

3. Burberry Would Like To Cash In On It’s ‘Chav’ Heritage Now

Burberry’s iconic carmel-coloured check went from chic to ‘chav’ in the early 2000s by way of a handful of celebrities the brand deemed less than desirable. Turning on their heel, Burberry removed their signature tartan from the majority of their designs. But, now that their sales have slumped in recent seasons and they are cashing in on the current nostalgia for the early millennia.

4. Chalayan’s Practical Headwear

Hussein Chalayan showed grey tailoring steeped with the minimalism and unease of Christian Bale’s American Psycho alongside bonkers headgear. Think: large geometric pieces that framed the face. Bizarre.

5. A Takeaway Box As A Handbag

From her spring-summer 2018 collection, we can now say Anya Hindmarch likes a late-night kebab. Her show, which was a homage to suburbia with handbags shaped like throw cushions and models dressed in housecoats, featured one silver clutch shaped like the polystyrene container you get your post-party cheesy chips in.
