A petition calling for the ban of fur at London Fashion Week has garnered almost 90,000 signatures in the fortnight since it was launched.

Set up by Ed Winters, co-founder of animal rights group Surge, the petition calls on the British Fashion Council to stop allowing designers who use fur to show their collections.

'In the year 2000 fur farming was banned in the UK due to the horrific nature of these practices but fur can still be legally imported into this country,' it says. 'Why is it that London Fashion Week finds it morally justifiable to still provide a platform for fur and profit off the exploitation of an industry that was outlawed in the UK 17 years ago?'

The group also plans to stage a protest outside the London Fashion Week headquarters on the Strand this weekend, after a similar demonstration last season.

The vast majority of designers at London Fashion Week have already eschewed the use of fur, including Vivienne Westwood, Shrimps, Christopher Ræburn and Felder Felder.
