Speaking as part of the virtual summit for Vogue’s Forces Of Fashion, Lizzo spoke rather matter-of-factly about the obstacles she personally faces when it comes to fashion. ‘As a big girl, fashion wasn’t available for my body type, so I had to get creative, ’ she explained. The singer was video calling with Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, a frequent collaborator, and discussed how she made it work. ‘If it wasn’t made for me, I made it for me - we have that in common.’
She remained positive, however, about fashion’s potential to make people feel seen and welcome, even if the industry still has a long way to go to being truly size inclusive. ‘For someone like me, to have great designers make bespoke special pieces that fit my body, my rolls, my curves, that is the most special feeling. I feel so included, I feel so 'you belong here.''
Taking a scroll through Lizzo’s Instagram - @lizzobeeating - is like being immersed in a world where fashion is fun, freeing and, at times, used to send strategic messages, from her envy-inducing poolside shots to her costume for Halloween (a little black dress, made by Christian Siriano, covered with a simple call to action, ‘VOTE’).

Speaking about the election, Lizzo, who appeared on the campaign trail for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in Detroit, Michigan, praised Harris, the first woman and person of colour to be elected as Vice President. ‘I love when Kamala said, ‘although I am the first Black female VP I'm definitely not gonna be the last, because what I represent is possibility.’ That's how I feel about being the first fat Black woman on the cover of Vogue: I'm definitely not gonna be the last.’
