It's true that nobody could have predicted the mass hysteria that would arise from a woman wearing knitwear. But that's exactly what happened when Katie Holmes took to the streets of New York in Khaite's unexpected cashmere combo of a bra and matching cardigan. The internet went wild, Holmes has been relentlessly pursued ever since. And we're still talking about it. Why? Because she unwittingly set in motion one of the most ubiquitous – and unlikely – trends since, well, maybe anything. For now, even Hailey Bieber is sporting such a two-piece – and in October no less.
You may remember that the teeny tiny crop top was big news in August. Celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid had taken the humble top to terrifying new heights, showing more torso than ever before. Just a flash in summer's pan, you might have thought; a trend only appropriate for scorching heatwaves. Well, you'd be wrong – or at least Bieber would say so, for she decided to wear Jacquemus' barely-there rib-knitted bra to face October's climes.
Interestingly, the £95 top is mostly sold out online. And yes, there is a matching cardigan available (and indeed, that too has flown off the virtual shelves). While Jacquemus' combo is slightly more affordable than Khaite's cashmere set, it's not just designer brands capitalising on the new two piece – they're all over the high street, too.
It started with Zara, as these things do. And then even Primark launched its own homage to Katie Holmes' 'bradigan'. Now, however, one can barely move for knitted co-ords. Maybe it's the timing – most of us are working from home, which requires enhanced levels of comfort. It also allows us all the opportunity to trial more unexpected trends before we may or may not decide to take them out into real life.
Whatever the reason, it looks like the knitted bra and matching cardigan isn't just a celebrity fad – most styles are selling at rapid pace and a lot have already sold out across the high street and luxury brands. But are you really that surprised? This is 2020, after all.
