Photographs of Kim Kardashian and her sister Kourtney on holiday in Mexico have surfaced. Most likely you’ve already seen them. But, while other publications (no naming names here) have been fascinated by her unairbrushed assets, we can’t stop staring at her extensive bikini collection.
Kim, who is slowly, but surely, returning to the public eye, has been spotted on holiday in three different bikinis. We can all agree that what you wear on the beach says a lot about you. I, for one, favour a cover-all one-piece with enough support to lift up a small city, while Kim has shown favour for vintage styles. Divisive (and possibly unhygienic) as wearing a second-hand swimsuit is, she’s been making a strong case for early Noughties fashion.
The first image to surface was of her wearing a Diorissimo two-piece from the label’s problematic 2004 ‘rasta’ capsule collection. She wore it with gold hoops and mirrored lens sunglasses – the look was very J.Lo in the video for Love Don’t Cost A Thing.
It was sourced from vintage dealer Gabriel Held who is NY’s go-to man when it comes to unearthing rare fashion pieces. It was his by-appointment archives that Lena Dunham raided for recent Girls promo tour, and it is his Instagram account that editors are currently drooling over. He got his start assisting costume stylist Patricia Field on Sex and The City but quickly switched to collection clothing and styling in his own right.
'One of Kim stylists, Danielle Levi knows to always come to me for all of Kim's vintage needs. When she called inquiring about bikinis, I knew immediately that the Dior pieces would be perfect! Kim is definitely involved in the selection process because I was told she was particularly excited about these pieces. I'm always thrilled to have my vintage on her', Gabriel told The Debrief.
The fact that Kim wore this contentious vintage bikini isn’t very surprising as Noughties fashion is back with force. Between Wavey Garms, Juicy Couture’s recent collaboration with Vetements and Kendall Jenner wearing a Paris Hilton-esque chainmail dress on her birthday, the so-ironic-it’s-stylish early 2000s are back. And, nothing symbolises this era quite like unabashedly wearing Diorissimo. John Galliano (before he was exiled from Dior) was the standard-bearer of the era, his Christian Dior collections were the thermometer fashion was measured by. So, Kim’s recent discovery of Dior’s camp past feels right on the money for right now.
For Kim’s latest bikini outing she was styled by Abigail Claire and Damian Collins who works with Rihanna. She wore a crystallised creation by Aidan Euan. It took him over 15 hours to attach over 6,000 Swarovski crystals by hand (!) to Kim’s silver swimsuit.
Lesson learnt: I need to up my bikini-game.
