Every so often a cult fashion label launches, not with fireworks and a fashion show, but with Chinese whispers. It happened to Staud, Reformation and Réalisation Par and just look where they are now! This time it's US ready-to-wear line Khaite that's emerging from under the cloak of gossip to become this season’s buzz brand.

Selena Gomez, who seemingly treats every day like a fashion show, debuted a head-to-toe Khaite look in Hollywood this weekend. She wore a scarlet midi skirt, and black skin-slick knit top with a square neckline. It perfectly summed up the label, which is also coveted by Brit Marling, Lily Aldridge and Caroline de Maigret.

Khaite, which launched less than a year ago in the fall of ’16, has a simple philosophy: make and sell wearable separates. The line's designer Cate Holstein calls on great American heroines for reference, which means a look through their rails reads like tour of Annie Hall, Jacqueline Kennedy and Katherine Hepburn’s wardrobes. For autumn Khaithe’s designer, Holstein has created a collection of Diane Keaton suits, voluminous knits, plush velvet and cardigans, as well as jeans, which are a lynchpin of the labels perennial offering. As a devotee of denim, Holstein has previously told the New York Times of the years she spent pursuing the perfect pair. Unable to find her dream fit, Holstein decided to make her own. She used classic shapes as guide, but updated them to flatter with higher waistlines or more stretch. The results are timeless and comfortable.

Though Gomez and Aldridge’s personal styles couldn’t be further apart, Khaite’s understated polished separates act as a chic bridge for the two women. Maybe, it’s because the line is grounded in clean-cut basics, which let's be honest, this is something nobody, not even us, can ever get enough.
