If, like us, you're an avid Kardashian Klan follower, the name Pia Mia (or at least the face) may already be familiar to you. Guam born singer Pia Mia has been hanging with the LA kool krowd (sorry, we couldn't resist) for months now, and is often featured in the girls' Instagram feeds.
Pia has recorded a number of phenomenal covers and we're not the only ones paying attention - Kim Kardashian shared a video of the 18-year-old singing her take on Drake's 'Hold On, We're Going Home' at the dinner table (to an audience that included Drake and Kanye, no less - talk about pressure!) which very quickly went viral.
Pia has now landed a campaign as the face of MISSGUIDED's high summer range as part of the Babes of MISSGUIDED - the brand’s celebration of talented girls from around the world. We caught up with Pia to talk who she thinks is the most stylish Kardashian, pushing fashion boundaries and more....
Grazia Daily: So your campaign with MISSGUIDED has just launched. What made you want to get involved?
I love Missguided! It gives everyone an opportunity to find a piece that fits into their own style, plus they have everything from casual wear to more high-end pieces. I’d already been wearing Missguided, so for me it was the perfect brand and the perfect fit.
**Grazia Daily: ****How would you describe your style? **
With fashion I go through phases. I get a piece then I wear it and wear it until I’m over it and then I move on to something new.
**Grazia Daily: ****What’s the latest piece you’ve been obsessed with? **
Missguided have this amazing fringe suede jacket – the jacket is super soft and it has a little belt that goes around it – it goes with everything! There’s also this really cute suede crop top that I’ve been wearing a lot, too.
**Grazia Daily: ****We’re loving suede this summer, too! Are there any other trends you’re feeling or do you not really follow trends? **
I don’t really follow trends; I kind of like to make my own. Right now I’m obsessed with crop tops and tube tops.
**Grazia Daily: ****Do you have a style icon? **
Not necessarily… I’m always looking on Tumblr, which I think is mainly where I get my ideas. I think Michael [Jackson] was so dope with his fashion and always doing things that were different and stood out. He wasn’t afraid to try new things and make them cool. I like the fact that he always challenged himself with fashion.
**Grazia Daily: ****You’re friends with the super stylish likes of Kendall, Kylie, Gigi Hadid and co. Whose style are you most inspired by? **
I love all the girls’ style, they all have insane style but I would say for sure Kylie’s. She’s always wearing something new and something out there. She’s not afraid to be herself and be different and I think that’s a great thing, it’s what I try do with my style too.
**Grazia Daily: **Your friendship with Kylie and the Kardashian family has really helped your music career, too. Kim uploaded a video of you performing a cover of Drake’s song – to Drake and Kanye (!) – over dinner at their house and it went viral! Was performing to them really nerve-wracking?
It wasn’t planned at all so when it happened I was kind of shocked. I had just done the Drake cover, I had just made it maybe a few days before so it was super fresh for me. Singing Drake his own song that I’d completely redone with its own melody was definitely nerve-wracking, but they both made me feel very comfortable. I love Kylie, her family have always been super supportive of me. Drake loved it and I’m really glad that I got that experience; it was really special.
**Grazia Daily: ****You’ve just released a new single called ‘Do It Again’ with Chris Brown and Tyga. Tell us a bit about it… **
It’s probably the record that’s most me because I grew up on Guam and J Boog is one of the first concerts I ever went to and he sang ‘Do It Again.’ I was super inspired by the song and I wanted to take a popular reggae record and blow it up even more and make it more like a rhythmic pop version. I love Chris [Brown] and Tyga and I’ve always looked up to them as artists so to be on a song with them is really special for me. They killed the record!
**Grazia Daily: ****Seems like things have really been taking off! Any highlights in particular that have stuck out? **
Coming from Guam and having a dream of being a singer at eight years old isn’t something that’s easy to accomplish, so I’m very proud of where I am today. My dad still lives on the island with my siblings and he flies in back and forth… [my highlight was] the day I signed to Interscope, it was perfect because it was the day he flew in from Guam so he got to be there; it was very special for us. I was 14 when I moved to LA and I knew nothing about music or about how to go about doing anything, I just knew that I had a dream and I wanted to be a singer and inspire people, and here I am today and that’s something that’s just so incredible to me.
