Earlier this year, the talented twosome split from Marc by Marc Jacobs after three highly commended seasons at the helm because head honchos made the surprise decision to fold the sister range into one overarching Marc Jacobs super-brand.

Fortunately, the pair had also been spending time working on their own separate label. Launching exclusively on MatchesFashion.com, Hillier Bartley caters to a girl who likes her clothes to speak volumes without ever being uncomfortable or wrought with overthought. Pieces you can throw on and go. ‘We realised that as 40-year-olds we wanted to feel more womanly, more civilised, more elegant without forgoing our inner indie kid,’ Luella and Katie say. And so they looked to menswear, liking ‘the idea of becoming more refined, more distinguished, more raffish, more decadent, more suave and less concerned with the rules of fashionability’. Also, skipping the concept of totally different collections each season, they’ll evolve the Hillier Bartley offering as time goes by, creating investment pieces.

The kind of quirky touches you’d expect from Luella abound, such as the velvet epaulettes on a military knit. And there’s a whiff of the runways’ new love for the ’80s with outsized tailoring and white socks and loafers styled with everything.
