The office had a marmite reaction to this image of The Duchess of Cambridge wearing this season’s biggest trend. Half were ‘oohing’ and ‘aaahing’ over it. While, a select few said she killed it, and not in that cool, ‘she’s nailed it’ way.
Over the course of the most recent fashion weeks one street style trend, that was hot off the J.W. Anderson and Proenza Schouler catwalks, was everywhere. Essentially, it went viral. Oversized statement earrings were being worn both on- and off- the catwalks. They were XXXL in size and gloriously eccentric in design. Our favourite styles came either soldered into modernist metal shapes, like something you’d find hanging in the Tate Modern, or were twiddly, jewel clusters that dangle like a chandelier. It was this, of all the trends that were available to her, that Kate went hard on at the recent opening night of 42nd Street musical in London.
The Princess' which are by Kate Spade cost £88. They were a bevvy of tassels and baubles in a plum colour that matched her Marchesa Notte crimson gown. She wore them with her hair down and slightly curled. She successfully made this out-there trend subtle. After seasons of minimal jewellery, this sort of eccentric accessory makes a big bold statement, even if it’s worn as tastefully as Kate did.
Kate Middleton, as she was formally known, is the very definition of establishment. She’s part of the Royal Family for God’s sake. She’s a privately schooled, university educated member of the aristocracy. So, when she tries a trend she exposes it to a new dimension, it can’t be considered kooky and underground anymore. From her well-documented love of LK Bennet shoes and Jenny Packman dresses, she likes to look accessible and modern. So, her trying this trend, whether we like it or not means it’s not just for the street style savants, the young gun fashion trendsetters anymore, it’s something we can all wear.
