Kanye West debuted his Yeezy Season 4 fashion line at New York Fashion Week this week and… let's just say it divided opinion. Not least because it started two hours late, causing some of the models - who were waiting in the heat - to faint.
Taking to the stage for a mini-concert at the Harper's Bazaar 'Icons by Carine Roitfield' event in New York on Friday night, Kanye took the opportunity to respond to critics.
While performing 'Runaway', complete with infamous line: "let's have a toast for the douchebags," he repeatedly stuck his middle finger up, before addressing the crowd: "At the beginning of this performance, I tried my best to not try. No, I tried to listen to all the reports and s--t and I tried my best to stop trying," he said, referring to the mixed reviews.
"But I just couldn't do it! I couldn't stop. No matter what they write, I just couldn't stop."
He then went on to thank the audience for supporting his foray into fashion, saying: "I appreciate y'all going on this journey for me. I appreciate all the years y'all put up with me learning in front of you and listening to the music at the same time."
Indeed, the delays to the show were not the only thing that caused controversy, with Kanye facing a barrage of backlash before it even happened after sending out a casting call for 'multiracial women only'.
One user took to Twitter to write, ‘Now imagine if a white singer said ‘white women only’’. Whilst another tweeted, ‘A casting call for 'multiracial women only'. How do you expect to determine that?’
Among the star-studded audience at the Harpers Bazaar Icons party on Friday were Kim Kardashian, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie; who snapchatted the whole thing, of course.
