Jonathan Saunders was been announced as the new Chief Creative Officer of Diane von Furstenberg, taking place with immediate effect.

Saunders, who announced the closure of his eponymous label in December of last year due to 'personal reasons', will be responsible for the creative direction of the brand.

'Jonathan's extraordinary passion for colours and prints, his effortless designs, and his desire to make women feel beautiful make him the perfect creative force to lead DVF into the future,' founder Diane von Furstenberg said in a statement. 'I could not have found a cooler, more intelligent designer and I cannot wait to watch him shine as our chief creative officer.'

'The spirit with which this brand was founded is incredibly relevant today. I am thrilled to be part of its next chapter,' added Saunders. 'Diane has a unique ability to deeply connect with women and I am excited to be working with Paolo on the future of the brand.'

Saunders was previously rumoured to be in the running to replace Raf Simons as creative director of Dior, following the Belgian designer's departure last autumn. Simons is expected to join Calvin Klein later this year, replacing Francisco Costa, although this is yet to be officially confirmed, while Dior are yet to name a successor.

Since making his debut at London Fashion Week in 2003, Jonathan Saunders has become a fashion insider's favourite, known for his dramatic, brightly coloured prints and use of silk screening techniques.
