At an opening ceremony performed to a near-empty stadium for this year's Olympics, Dr Jill Biden, one of the few VIPs, certainly toed the party line. Biden chose a black-and-white polka dot dress from Brandon Maxwell, an old favourite that she wore as recently as last month in Cornwall.

The fact that she's worn the dress before sent a message of modesty, a mood that was quite in keeping with a ceremony that took pains to honour the people who lost their lives to Covid-19. While there were beautiful moments before each country made their entrance, there's no doubt that the occasion was much more sombre than previous ceremonies, where pomp and circumstance was very much the order of the day.

She also didn't take a literal approach to dressing à la Kate Middleton, who wore a scarlet pair of earrings and a white blazer to watch the Euros 2021, eschewing the colours of the Stars and Stripes for monochrome (although Maxwell, the dress's designer, is American). What can we say? The woman is the master of sartorial diplomacy.
