Jeremy Scott may fetishize the objects of youth, like Barbie dolls and Spongebob Square Pants, but his eponymous label has just celebrated its 20th birthday. When Scott, who also leads the design team at Moschino, first got into the business of fashion it was through luck, gumption and good timing. But, his staying power and host of famous fans shows his popularity is much more than being in the right place at the right time.
This evening at New York Fashion Week, Scott called on old friends and keen fans Devon Aoki, Gigi Hadid, Coco Rocha, Jourdan Dunn, Sofia Richie and Liberty Ross to celebrate his work anniversary. With an upcoming retrospective already planned at Dallas’ Contemporary Museum, this show was just another opportunity for Scott to prove his power player status at New York Fashion Week.
Littered with crystal covered leather jackets and slinky metallic crop tops, Scott’s Spring Summer 18 collection was an ode to club kids everywhere. The show, which moved through one-piece swimwear, to micro dresses, to oversized, to layering pieces and Coyote Ugly-worthy snakeskin trousers, was tied together by camouflage and multi-coloured exotic skin and zany illustrations. Looking like the back catalogue of a raver’s wardrobe, Punky Fish-lite fishnet sleeves were layered under strappy crop tops, while abbreviated handkerchief skirts were worn with Dr Martins esque footwear.
A moment of lightness came from a handful of looks tailored out of featherweight tulle. Though one model walked out in a head-to-toe lurid hoodie with matching cargo pants and pleated boa all made from tulle, the vast proportion of this fabrication was dedicated to a new dawn of naked dresses. Models bared it all in black tulle slips that came with oversized bibs of jewellery that carried stones the size of a fist and glinted in the cameras eye.
If Scott’s collection is any indication, expect next Spring to be the second wave of New Rave, but this time with less neon and more sequins.
