Good news for aspiring J. Crew customers – the brand is reportedly going to launch a new, more affordable range under the name J. Crew Mercantile.

For a label that made it's name on not being too spenny (isn't that why everyone made a big deal about Michelle Obama wearing J. Crew cardies?), its prices seem to have spiralled of late. £1,350 for a coat, anyone? While it would be nice if the mainline collection were slightly more purse-friendly – £300 for a cotton minidress is not a bargain – we'll settle for a cheaper sister line.

And it looks like we could be filling our shopping bag soon, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reports that the new arm of the company will sell pieces at the same prices as those in its factory outlets.

So any fans of Jenna Lyons's classic preppy style should be able to kit themselves out without having to forgo food for a month. Sounds good to us.
